Weapon abilities

From UO:PvE Wiki

All 31 registered weapon abilities, their current availability, costs, conditions and local implementation differences.

Development source reviewed on 29 October 2026. In-game availability is unverified.

Current availability#

The registry contains 31 abilities. Twenty-one have current non-retired weapon assignments; eight have no current weapon assignment; two are assigned only to retired throwing weapons. A source definition is not proof that a player can select it.

Riding Swipe and Nerve Strike explicitly require disabled Bushido; Talon Strike and Dual Wield explicitly require disabled Ninjitsu. Armor Pierce and Double Shot remain assigned to playable weapon types and use inherited Tactics checks, despite old comments mentioning Bushido/Ninjitsu.

Weapon and skill requirements#

A player must wield a weapon assigning the requested ability. The normal thresholds are 70 base weapon skill and 70 base Tactics for a primary ability, or 90/90 for a secondary ability. Use Best Weapon Skill can substitute base Swords, Macing or Fencing for the weapon skill threshold. Individual records list exemptions and additional requirements.

Abilities cannot be validated during an active spell in the current ML rules. An explicitly required disabled secondary skill causes rejection. Some abilities also require mounts, poison charges, a valid target or an SE-capable client.

Mana calculation#

Add effective Swords, Macing, Fencing, Archery, Parry, Lumberjacking, Mining, Stealth and Poisoning. A total of at least 300 subtracts 10 from base mana; a total of at least 200 subtracts 5; lower totals receive no discount.

Apply the Mind Rot scalar (otherwise 1.0), subtract min(Lower Mana Cost,40)/100 from that scalar, multiply by the discounted base mana, and truncate to an integer. If the attacker is already on the three-second ability cooldown, double that result. Paying mana starts the cooldown only when none is running; repeated uses do not restart that existing timer.

Many abilities consume mana on a hit, after validation. Moving Shot pays before the swing, Double Shot acts after either hit or miss, and some target immunities/conditions are checked after payment. Per-ability entries identify those exceptions.

Reading the implementation notes#

The catalogue follows executable source rather than copied expansion descriptions. Known source discrepancies are called out alongside the affected ability; they are audit findings, not changes to the shard. Timing values describe the configured timer delays and intervals, not a measured latency guarantee.
