Parrying with shields and melee weapons

From UO:PvE Wiki

The shard uses a direct Parrying formula and does not require Bushido.

Development source reviewed on 29 October 2026. In-game availability is unverified.

Chance to parry#

With a shield, chance = Parrying ÷400. With a melee weapon and no shield, chance = Parrying ÷800. Add 0.05 when Parrying is at least 100. If Dexterity is below 80, multiply the result by (20 + Dexterity) ÷100.

Without a shield, fists, ranged weapons and thrown weapons cannot parry. The successful normal weapon-hit block sets that hit’s damage to zero. Damage from other independent effects can have separate handling.

At 80 Dexterity or above#

ParryingShieldMelee weapon, no shield

80.020%10%
99.924.975%12.4875%
100.030%17.5%
120.035%20%

Low-Dexterity example#

At 100 Parrying and 50 Dexterity, multiply by 0.70: shield parry becomes 21%, and weapon parry becomes 12.25%. Defence Chance Increase affects the earlier hit roll; it does not directly increase this parry chance.

Evasion and retired skills#

Bushido, Ninjitsu and their player spell schools are disabled by shard policy. Evasion is not an available player defence to add to this formula. Existing engine hooks for retired content are not evidence that players can cast it.
