Decoding and digging treasure maps

From UO:PvE Wiki

Cartography decodes the map; Mining widens the digging search radius.

Development source reviewed on 29 October 2026. In-game availability is unverified.

Decode the map#

Double-click an undecoded map within 2 tiles. The ordinary skill check runs from the listed minimum to minimum+60. A decoded map marks the treasure with a red pin. Level 0 maps are reserved for eligible young players.

Digging#

Carry a Mining harvest tool, reach the map’s facet, choose the dig action and target the suspected spot. Someone other than the decoder must meet the map’s Cartography requirement. Do not stand directly on the chest location.

51.0–80.92 tiles

Prepare for the chest#

Ordinary maps can produce locked, trapped chests and guardians. Level 1 has no initial guardian spawn; levels above 1 spawn four initial guardians in this source. Opening and lifting loot can involve further danger.

Exact map sites and current map access are world-dependent. The recovered treasure chest expires after three hours; treat it as temporary storage.
