What the number means#
Difficulty is an NPC encounter rating. It is not a player level. Most creatures are rated from their current health, average resistances, attack damage, combat skills, spellcasting AI and special abilities. Different stat rolls can therefore produce different ratings for the same creature type.
Scripted Fracture enemies use their assigned expedition difficulty. Champion-class enemies, the Harrower and the Dark Father are fixed at 100. Wild greater dragons have a floor of 80, or 95 when paragon. Service NPCs normally rate 1.
| Rating | Strength label |
|---|---|
| 1 | Minimal |
| 2–10 | Very easy |
| 11–20 | Easy |
| 21–40 | Moderate |
| 41–60 | Challenging |
| 61–80 | Hard |
| 81–99 | Very hard / elite |
| 100 | Champion / boss |
Choose meaningful encounters#
Your recommended range changes with adventurer level. Bounties and adventure drops require meaningful difficulty: encounters that qualify for the full experience percentage under your progression and license rules. An enemy can be too weak to count even when it matches the requested family.
Entry into the Fracture checks both your licensed maximum and your current recommended maximum. The entry difficulty must also be meaningful for every member.
| Adventurer level | Recommended difficulty |
|---|---|
| 1–10 | 1–20 |
| 11–20 | 15–35 |
| 21–30 | 25–50 |
| 31–40 | 40–65 |
| 41–50 | 55–80 |
| 51–59 | 70–95 |
| 60 | 85–100 |
Two different sets of bands#
Hunter assignments use D2–20, 21–35, 36–50, 51–65, 66–80 and 81–95. Ordinary loot uses different boundaries: 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 99 and 100. Crossing a Hunter band does not always increase the ordinary gold or item budget.
These ratings describe implemented rules, not a promise that every creature type or encounter is currently spawned.
